Recent reports have shown that the 2011 Chevrolet Volt has been calibrated to run on premium gasoline. The news surprised some, considering that its range-extending engine is intended to help drivers save money at the pump.
Luckily, GM powertrain spokesman Tom Read has confirmed that the Volt is equipped with a knock sensor, like most modern engines. Although the Volt is calibrated for premium, the knock sensor will adjust the spark advance to prevent potential engine damage when regular gas is detected.
The need for requiring premium gasoline has been questioned since the Volt is by no means a performance vehicle. However, premium gasoline is said to have a longer shelf life and this would be important considering that many drivers may choose to maximize their vehicle’s electric capability and use as little gasoline as possible.
