With fuel efficiency being the name of the game these days, General Motors will be highlighting its newest eco-friendly model, aptly named the Chevrolet Cruze Eco, at this week’s New York Auto Show.

Powering the new 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco is a 138 horsepower 1.4-liter Ecotec turbocharged engine with variable valve timing which helps it achieve a very competitive 40 miles per gallon. When mated to a six-speed manual transmission, the Cruze Eco should also go from 0 to 60 mph in about 10 seconds, which again is competitive considering its impressive estimated fuel economy. The standard engine for the Chevrolet Cruze is a 136 horsepower 1.8-liter Ecotec four-cylinder engine.

“The Cruze Eco delivers hybrid-like efficiency without the price tag,” said Jim Campbell, U.S. vice president Chevrolet marketing. “Along with the Volt electric vehicle, it demonstrates how Chevrolet is working to bring new products to market that range from gas-friendly to gas-free.”

Chevrolet new 1.4-liter Ecotec turbo engine will become available on other Cruze trims as well, but only the Eco model will have other features to boost fuel efficiency. These include a lower front grille air shutter, rear spoiler, underbody panels, and lower front air dam that all help to improve aerodynamics. According to Lubbock Chevrolet, the Cruze Eco will also get lightweight aluminum wheels wrapped in ultra-low rolling resistance 17-inch tires.

The all-new Chevrolet Cruze Eco will reach showrooms later this year.
