After singling and scoring a run during the first inning, then mashing a two-run homer in the fourth, San Francisco Giants outfielder Melky Cabrera was honored as the Most Valuable Player of the 2012 MLB All-Star Game—and was rewarded with both a National League win and a 2013 Chevy Camaro Convertible ZL1.
The victory was the third in a row for baseball’s senior circuit, which means the National League team will once again have home-field advantage for this year’s World Series, but Dayton Chevrolet told us that Chevrolet’s own All-Star winning streak goes back even further. Since being named Official Vehicle of Major League Baseball in 2005, the Bowtie brand has been an elite player at every Midsummer Classic, including this year’s in Kansas City. There, Chevy support included providing:
- Free ride-and-drive opportunities at the MLB All-Star Fan Fest
- A media-only event to teach automotive journalists how to drive manual transmissions(!)
- 75 Chevy Silverado pickups and Camaro Convertibles for the All-Star parade
- A number of different efforts to support youth baseball, like a Fan Fest station where visitors could build benches for Kansas City-area teams in need, and the chance to play Chevy’s Baseball App video game, with each virtual hit resulting in a real dollar contribution
In addition, as the MVP, Cabrera will select a location for Chevy’s Diamonds & Dreams campaign, now in its third year of travelling the country to refurbish deserving youth baseball fields. Vancouver Chevrolet told us for 2012, the program is working with Ripken Design—part of the baseball empire run by MLB legend Cal Ripken Jr.—to spruce-up an even dozen diamonds.
