Chevrolet may be vying to stay competitive in a rapidly changing market by introducing a mini car to its domestic lineup.  Already Chevrolet has been quite busy retooling its production and lineup, as the dramatic and sudden shift among consumers from trucks to cars has only deepened. High gas prices are among the biggest concerns currently for consumers, and as such small cars are in high demand for their fuel efficiency and overall affordability.

Already many other automakers offer mini cars, including the Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris, and even Nissan Versa. Considering that the current rise in gasoline is showing no signs of changing any time soon, the need for a mini car is the automaker’s lineup would certainly be welcomed. Demand for fuel efficient vehicles and hybrids have been steadily increasing as overall vehicle demand has been decreasing. This trend has even fueled the sales of compact used cars which as been evident at Used Cars Ponchatoula,  making the vehicles such as GM’s own Geo Metro somewhat popular for its incredible value and fuel economy.

Chevrolet has already showed off the Beat, a new mini car to be built in South Korea. In addition to the North American market, the Beat may be offered in other markets as well. Although the vehicle still is in development, dealers that want something to attract more customers from the burgeoning youth market such as San Diego Corvette appreciate that the Beat concept showed well at auto shows last year and had plenty of interest among a younger demographic.

Currently, the Chevrolet Aveo is the brand’s only mini car competitor, but it has not enjoyed the success of other brands in the segment. As the need for more mini cars increases, the Beat will likely find its way into the lineup. It will offer front-wheel drive, a three-door hatchback configuration, and a 1.2-liter turbo gas-powered engine. To be competitive, the price tag will have to remain around $10K. As U.S. car sales continue to slump, the advantage of having a selection of mini cars to choose from will certainly help the automaker stay competitive in an increasingly unforgiving environment.
