The 2011 Cruze is one of Chevrolet’s most fuel-efficient models, offering as much as 42 miles per gallon on the highway. One of the ways Chevrolet achieved this level of efficiency is by including an on-board tire inflator kit in lieu of a traditional spare tire. This move sheds about 26 pounds from the Cruze’s overall weight, and ultimately helps save fuel.
The inflator kit is among 42 changes to the Cruze Eco that have helped it achieve very hybrid-like fuel economy. And, since changing a flat tire on a busy freeway can be a dirty and dangerous job, the move to get rid of the spare tire was also an important safety consideration.
“Getting rid of something as important as the spare tire wasn’t a decision we made lightly,” said Terry Connolly, GM director of Tire and Wheel Systems. “The universal implementation of tire pressure monitoring systems over the past five years has significantly reduced the likelihood that a flat tire will leave you stranded by the side of the road.”
Cruze Eco also features a Tire Pressure Monitoring System that warns the driver whenever tire pressure has been compromised. The system can also warn of tire damage or puncture by a screw, nail or other object. In the event of a puncture, the inflator can inject a sealant capable of plugging holes of up one-quarter-inch in diameter in the tread area.
“The Cruze engineering team equipped the Eco with industry-leading low rolling-resistance tires. Ensuring that they stay properly inflated will help drivers get the full benefit of this lower fuel consumption,” said Connolly. “Tire pressure actually changes about one pound per square inch for every 10 degrees of ambient temperature change. Keeping your tires at the recommended pressure year round means drivers won’t have to fill the fuel tank quite as often.”
