Chevrolet Washington DC agrees that renewable solar power is catching on as a viable option to charge electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. One Chevrolet Volt owner, Mark Hildebrand, even developed his own solar panel array to charge his vehicle.
“I made the switch to renewable energy a while ago, and thus with solar energy, I can power my house, charge my Volt and pump energy back into the grid, which I get credit for,” said Hildebrandt, owner of Sunventrix in Saline, Mich., and one of the first Volt purchasers in the state.
According to Los Angeles Chevrolet Dealers, Hildebrandt isn’t the only consumer eager to harness the sun for battery power. Winemaster and ZD Wines CEO, Robert deLeuze, charges his Volt using his winery’s photovoltaic system.
“Solar power generation makes sense, and I think the Volt will help generate more interest in home installations” said deLeuze. “ZD Wines has had a solar power station for the past three years and purchasing my Volt was a driving factor in installing a solar photovoltaic system at my house.”
Minneapolis Chevrolet Dealers said that General Motors has also been eager to unleash the potenal of solar power. At the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant, where the Volt is built, GM has installed a 20kW Solar Carport that houses 10 Volt charging stations. Additional charging stations are planned for other locations around the plant.
With many Volt owners going up to 1,000 miles between gasoline fill-ups, the extended-range EV platform has truly proved to be highly efficient. And, with more consumers embracing solar power, the Volt has effectively become an ambassador for renewable energy.
