With launch of the 2010 Camaro, Chevrolet dealt a huge blow to Ford and the 2010 Mustang. Not only it did the Camaro spur excitement among GM enthusiasts, but the base Camaro was also equipped with a 3.6-liter V6 producing a staggering 300 horsepower and 29 mpg on the highway. Unfortunately, that advantage for Chevy was short-lived as the new 2011 Mustang’s V6 produced 305 horsepower and 30 mpg on the highway.
While Ford continues to hype the engine improvements they’ve made to the 2011 Mustang, Chevrolet is certainly not sitting idly by. According to John Fitzpatrick, GM’s marketing manager for the Chevrolet Camaro and Corvette, the Mustang’s horsepower advantage will be short-lived.
“It’s really great to see [Ford] stepping up their game,” Fitzpatrick said in an interview with Automobile Magazine. Fitzpatrick also implied that the Camaro was used as the primary benchmark for the updated Mustang. Warrenton Chevrolet agrees that Ford is simply reacting to the Camaro’s strong resurgence, and expect the Camaro will ultimately come out on top.
While the performance is of course the focal point of the Camaro, shoppers at Dunlap Chevrolet are consistently impressed with the car’s quality and attention to details. This combination of attractive traits will certainly help the Camaro maintain its edge in the renewed muscle car wars.
Within the next few weeks, details regarding the 2011 Chevrolet Camaro are expected to be released. Fitzpatrick’s recent comments to Automobile Magazine could signal that a surprise may await Chevy fans when these details emerge.
Interestingly enough, while the age-old rivalry between the Camaro and Mustang continues, consumers are faced with even more choices. The Genesis Coupe for example has been a popular muscle car alternative among Virginia Hyundai dealers for its style, affordability, and of course for its performance. For those car buyers that don’t care much for the muscle car pedigree, the imports are looking more and more tantalizing as well.
