Many automakers seem to be envisioning future vehicles that are compact, environmentally-friendly, and provide the ultimate experience in personal, urban transportation. General Motors is no exception, which is why the automaker just unveiled its Electric Networked Vehicle.
These all-electric two-seater concept vehicles have been developed by GM with the help of their Chinese partner Shanghai Automotive Industry. About one sixth the size of a conventional car, five of these vehicles can squeeze into a single parking space.
“It provides an ideal solution for urban mobility that enables future driving to be free from petroleum and emissions, free from congestion and accidents, and more fun and fashionable than ever before,” said Kevin Wale, head of the GM China Group.
The EN-V weights a mere 1,000 pounds thanks to its compact size and use of carbon fiber and other lightweight materials. GM believes that a vehicle such as the EN-V is the answer to traffic congestion and pollution.
“The EN-V concept represents a major breakthrough in the research that GM has been doing to bring vehicle autonomy to life,” said Alan Taub, global VP of research and development.
These pod-like EVs also include wireless communication and GPS-based navigation systems to help drivers avoid accidents, gauge real-time traffic conditions, and assist in finding the fastest routes to their destination.
