Thanks to a thorough effort to reduce weight, improve aerodynamics and develop a high-efficiency powertrain, the new 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco will boast EPA ratings of 28 mpg city and a segment-leading, hybrid-topping 42 mpg on the highway—better than the hybrid versions of the Ford Fusion, Nissan Altima and Toyota Camry. Yet with an MSRP of just $18,995, the Cruze Eco will cost thousands of dollars less than those cars.
“We left no stone unturned or piece of sheet metal un-weighed,” said Chuck Russell, vehicle line director for the Cruze. “Our engineers were comprehensive and thorough when it came to evaluating and modifying the aspects of the car’s performance that contribute to fuel economy.”
That includes leveraging 500 hours of wind-tunnel data from the Chevrolet Volt—which shares its core architecture with the Cruze—to optimize the Eco model’s slippery aerodynamics via features like a new lower-front air-dam extension, rear spoiler, underbody panels and a unique air-shutter system. This break-through technology closes “shutters” on the Cruze Eco’s lower grille for enhanced aerodynamics during higher speeds and opens them to help cool the engine at slower speeds. As a result of all this work, the Cruze Eco shows off a coefficient of drag of 0.298, the best of any mainstream compact.
The already-svelte Cruze also went on a significant diet to attain “Eco” status. It now weighs 214 lbs. less than the standard Cruze, courtesy of features like its new lightweight wheels and tires. In fact, each of the Eco’s high-style 17-inch alloy wheels, wrapped in Goodyear rubber, weighs more than 5 lbs. less than the regular Cruze’s 16-inch setup.
In Nashville, used cars are popular but may not get maximum fuel efficiency. Another major contributor to the Cruze Eco’s amazing fuel efficiency is its power-dense, high-efficiency Ecotec engine. Mated to a standard six-speed manual transmission specifically tuned for the Cruze Eco, the 1.4-liter turbocharged mill delivers a responsive 138 hp and 148 lb.-ft. of torque while still posting its segment-best EPA results. In addition, the car will be available with a six-speed autobox that’s good for 26 mpg city/37 mpg highway.
“Chevrolet Cruze continues to redefine the compact segment, offering class-leading standard safety features and upscale amenities—as well as hybrid-like fuel economy without the price,” added Russell. “The Cruze Eco is in a league of its own and will challenge perceptions of the efficiency available in a more affordable non-hybrid.”
