The all-new Chevrolet Malibu sedan made its North American debut this week at the New York Auto Show. While it’s a bold new direction for the popular Malibu, one of the most notable changes to this vehicle is the addition of the “ECO” model, which delivers the best fuel economy of any Chevrolet midsize sedan ever in the company’s 100 year history.
Hobbs Chevy said the 2013 Malibu ECO delivers an impressive 26 miles per gallon city / 38 highway mpg highway thanks to a range of features. For starters, the ECO is equipped with General Motors’ eAssist system, which combines a state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery with an electric motor-generator to enable regenerative braking electric assist and start-stop functionality. The system also aids the Malibu’s fuel-efficient Ecotec 2.4-liter four-cylinder and six-speed automatic transmission.
Additionally, Nashville TN Chevy trucks said the latest generation Malibu features an aerodynamic exterior including underbody aero enhancements. Up front, the Malibu’s grille even features electronically controlled shutters that close at higher speeds to push more air over and around the vehicle. Ultimately, these aerodynamic enhancements help to boost fuel economy.
Inside, the Malibu ECO features technology that should help to boost fuel economy even further. Lubbock TX used GM dealer said an ECO gauge in the cluster continuously responds to driving behavior and encourages fuel-efficient driving. Within the gauge cluster, the driver will also be able to see when the vehicle is in start-stop mode.
“The Malibu ECO is a smart choice for customers who want excellent fuel economy without the price premium of popular hybrid sedans,” said Rick Scheidt, vice president of Chevrolet marketing. “The Malibu ECO’s 38-mpg highway estimate is comparable with those hybrids.”
