Mazda is the only automaker that seems to have mastered the complexity of the rotary engine, but soon the Chevrolet Volt could feature one as well.
Engineers are reportedly already working on the second generation Volt, despite the fact that the 2011 model hasn’t even reached showrooms yet. One of the biggest challenges for the next Volt will be trimming costs, which will likely bring new engine options.
According to Karl Sracke, GM’s, vice president of global vehicle engineering, 2 cylinders, diesels, and rotary engines, are all being considered for the next-generation Volt.
“The cost of the engine would be higher for the manufacturer,” said Stracke says of the diesel, “but the fuel costs would be cheaper for customers.”
