As compared to the Chevrolet Volt, workhorses like the Chevy Silverado HD and Chevy Tahoe sit at the opposite end of the size spectrum, but all three do have a few things in common—and impressively, this includes being named segment winners in Vincentric’s 2012 Best Value in America awards. NASCAR followers have no doubt noticed that both Ford and Dodge have unveiled new cars for the 2013 season, while Team Chevrolet has kept its plans for next year to itself—but that’s not because Chevy is standing pat. In fact, just the opposite is true: The Bowtie brand is keeping mum about its latest Sprint Cup competitor because it will be based on a brand-new addition to Chevrolet’s production-vehicle lineup that also is still in development. However, Chevy enthusiasts can rest assured that, like the NASCAR competition, the brand’s new racer will showcase a design that is unmistakably similar to the one that will reach Chevrolet dealerships. The 580-hp Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 may be the fastest production Camaro to ever hit the street, but it will be a different member of the family that holds that title on the strip. The 2012 Chevy COPO Camaro—the first model built specifically to compete in the NHRA’s fastest vehicle classes—is targeting quarter-mile runs in the 9.0-second range and will be simply the quickest Camaro ever offered by Chevrolet. It’s true fuel prices are increasing, but so are customers’ choices when it comes to fueling their full-size pickups: The new extended-cab 2013 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD with bi-fuel capabilities—meaning it can run on either gasoline or clean-burning compressed natural gas (CNG)—will be available for retail and commercial ordering in April at Chevy Amarillo TX and other dealers throughout the United States. And in keeping with GM’s goal of providing its customers with multiple choices, a similarly powered GMC Sierra will be offered as well, with both available in two- and four-wheel-drive configurations and packing either standard or long pickup beds. Chevrolet’s leadership role in the U.S. passenger-car market got another major boost recently, when two of the brand’s next-generation vehicles—the Chevy Sonic and Chevy Cruze—were recognized by Consumer Reports for being among 2012’s Most Improved vehicles. Already touting plenty of efficiency and capability advantages against America’s other full-size pickups, the Chevrolet Silverado can now showcase another major benefit. It’s one of the least-expensive pickups in the U.S. to insure, trailing only its GM sibling, the GMC Sierra. And while the six-cylinder Sierra Regular Cab finished fifth overall on Insure.com’s rankings of low-cost insurance choices, according to Winnipeg Used Cars, the Silverado distinguished itself with two models in the top 10: The Regular Cab V6 was right behind the Sierra, in sixth place, and the Silverado Extended Cab V6 grabbed the 10th spot. According to Los Angeles Chevrolet, the 2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1 can streak from 0-60 mph in just 3.9 seconds, and while the prime mover here is the car’s supercharged 6.2-liter V8, its enhanced TapShift six-speed automatic transmission deserves some of the credit as well. GM’s powertrain engineers deployed an aggressive new TapShift software algorithm for use in the ZL1, improving response time by up to 60 percent as compared to past setups. As a result, drivers can shave a tenth of a second off the 0-60 time of a manual transmission ZL1—while still enjoying the hands-on thrill of shifting for themselves. [click to continue…]
When the diesel-powered Chevy Cruze hits the U.S. next year, it will provide owners with a brand-new kind of driving experience that delivers both more miles per gallon and more power per gallon than gasoline-driven alternatives. More importantly, according to Chevrolet New Orleans, it will be backed by extensive General Motors expertise with cutting-edge diesel technologies. Chevrolet Dealer IN said it’s because GM has long been a leader in diesel sales in international markets, delivering more than 500,000 diesel vehicles—including over 33,000 diesel Cruzes—last year alone.
