The 2011 Chevrolet Camaro SS is one powerful beast, thanks in no small part to its big-time 6.2-liter V8. With that stout heart under the hood making 426 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque, this killer Camaro is perhaps the hottest iteration of Chevrolet’s iconic muscle car ever built. Well, at least in terms of what you can get straight from the factory.
For drivers who want the ultimate street-legal Camaro experience, there’s another option: The 2010 Callaway Camaro SC572 and SC552—two hi-po hot rods from a company with more than 30 years’ worth of experience in developing “powerfully engineered, seriously fast” Chevrolets.
The hardest of the hard-core performers is the Camaro SC572, which starts with the Camaro SS’s standard LS3 V8 mated to a six-speed manual transmission and ends with a whopping 572 hp and 541 lb-ft of torque. In between, Callaway engineers added an Eaton supercharger, liquid-to-air intercooler and higher-flowing fuel injectors, cutting the car’s 0-60 time down to just 3.9 seconds and the quarter mile ET to a mere 11.94 seconds at 119.5 mph. And you get all that performance without giving up much in the way of fuel efficiency. That may not be the first concern when buying an SC572, but it’s still nice to know the Callaway car gets EPA estimated ratings of 15 mpg city/23 mpg highway as compared to the 16/24 numbers of the production Camaro SS.
Of course, the SC552 package is no slouch either. Relying on the LS99 V8/six-speed automatic combo that’s optional on the stock Camaro SS, this Callaway develops a healthy 552 horses of its own.
Both can also be fitted with comprehensive aero and handling upgrades that were precision engineered for use with the new Camaro. These include an enhanced suspension setup developed jointly with Eibach and offering a choice of new damper systems (fixed or adjustable), coil-over springs and a stabilizer bar, along with Callaway’s “CamAeroBody” kit. With that, drivers get a wide range of carbon fiber goodies like a front splitter, rear spolier, rear diffuser and rocker panels.
There are some audacious aesthetic components available, too. Particularly eye-catching is Callaway’s PowerWindow Hood, which boasts a transparent window to show off the car’s powerplant even with the hood down.
Perhaps most importantly, the Callaway Camaro SC572 and SC552 are high-quality vehicles with the warranty coverage to prove it. Because of the longtime Callaway/Chevrolet relationship, the cars maintain all original GM warranties. Callaway then adds its own three-year/36,000 mile powertrain warranty and similar bumper-to-bumper coverage on non-powertrain items. Notably, Callaway’s warranty also “covers specific GM engine parts compromised by failure of Callaway components.”
The 2010 Callaway Camaro SC572 and SC552 are available from select Chevrolet dealers across the country.
