About 4,400 Chevrolet Volt owners will be eligible for a free, 240-volt, charging station, as well as home installation. These grants will be made possible through the Department of Energy and are worth as much as $2,000 per household.
Aside from grants offered for owners of the Chevy Volt, the Department of Energy wants to install 15,000 home charging stations across the U.S. in order to with to encourage electric vehicle adoption as well as to foster the future of electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
“Many owners will plug their Volt into a normal 120-volt electrical outlet, charge overnight and drive to work in the morning using only battery power,” said Tony DiSalle, Product and Marketing Director for the Chevrolet Volt. “For Volt owners who want to install a faster 240-volt charge station, we expect the Department of Energy project to save $1,000 and $2,000.”
The Chevrolet Volt is an electric vehicle capable or driving up to 350 miles without refueling or recharging. For the first 40 miles of its total range it is powered entirely by electricity. Once the Volt’s battery has been depleted, its gasoline-powered engine/generator seamlessly operates to extend the driving range an additional 300 miles.
